Como Zoo's first Flamingo Chick Hatches
A Chilean flamingo is the first flamingo in Como Zoo’s history to have a baby chick. Como has been exhibiting flamingos since the late 1960s. The hatchling emerged from its egg on Thursday in the Zoo’s Bird Yard.
Due to the flamingo's unusual breeding practices, some AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) institutions have been unsuccessful producing chicks. But with increased research, zoos have been becoming more successful in recent years, including two reports this past week from Lincoln Park Zoo and Denver Zoo reporting their first eggs in history too.
Como keepers attribute the success on a few other factors. The birds were outside a little earlier this season, as well as the wetter than normal spring. This hatchling is one of three eggs laid in late June, the other two appear not to be viable, The eggs were put in an incubator and dummy eggs were replaced for the parents to sit on. Once it appeared this egg was in hatch stage, which generally takes 2-4 days, keepers replaced the dummy egg with the hatching egg.
The female lays one large egg atop a constructed mound of mud. The mound is usually about .3 meters (one foot) tall. The egg is incubated by both parents for 26-31 days. Among Chilean flamingos, the male is the primary care giver. Adults recognize the chick by sight and vocalizations and will not feed any other chick. Chicks are fed a red secretion of the upper digestive tract from both parents called “crop milk.” Although it isn’t truly milk—only mammals produce milk—it contains similar nutrients. The chick leaves the nest after four to seven days. |

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory Launches Public Space Recycling
Eureka Recycling and Como Park Zoo & Conservatory unveiled public space recycling stations at the Como Zoo today, making it possible for guests to recycle their bottles, cans, milk cartons, and juice boxes.
With funding from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Eureka Recycling, along with Saint Paul Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments have embarked on a study of public space recycling to ensure that the City of Saint Paul’s public space recycling program is built on sound information, stating with the zoo. “The City of Saint Paul is the first city in the country to systematically approach public space and park recycling to make sure it is truly sustainable,” explained Susan Hubbard, CEO of Eureka Recycling. For over a year, Como Zoo and Eureka Recycling have been studying what makes public recycling stations work. Now with public stations in place, they will closely monitor them to ensure the program is cost effective and environmentally sound.
Information gathered at the zoo site will be used to create the plan to launch public space recycling program throughout the city of Saint Paul. “The city’s goal is to make sure every single park and public space has real recycling. This project ensures that public space recycling in Saint Paul will not just be a façade, but that you will know it is really getting recycled, “said Saint Paul City Council Member Lee Helgen. “Once we understand how we can cost effectively run this program and make certain that we are really recycling the things you put in these containers, we are committed to replicating it throughout the city.“ |
